El dinosaurio que quiso volar

Desde mi escondite fotográfico , se adivinan unas siluetas entre la bruma. Veo aproximarse lenta pero decididamente a un par de Buitres. Su pescuezo largo, sus garras, su poderoso pico y sobre todo la fuerza de su mirada…me recuerdan a los Velociraptors de Jurassic Park.

Esa mirada feroz, con el tamaño de los ojos tan grande en relación al tamaño de su cabeza, Esa mirada inexpresiva de ofidio…

Hace 350 millones de años, los grandes saurios dominaban aquella Tierra primitiva y brutal. Mientras que ellos prosperaron, su tamaño aumentó de manera espectacular . Para los mamíferos de esos días las cosas pintaban diferentes, eran presas de los saurios cazadores, por lo tanto el tamaño más adecuado para pasar desapercibidos era el de una pequeña musaraña.

A lo largo del predominio de los dinosaurios, durante el Jurásico, los reptiles conquistaron casi todos los medios. Y hace unos 150 millones de años incluso algunos de tamaño más reducido se subieron a los árboles , seguramente persiguiendo a las libélulas y otros insectos. Para adecuarse a las alturas , esos primeros saurios arborícolas fueron ( generación tras generación) empequeñeciéndose. Se supone que hubo un período de miles de años en que los saurios se especializaron en saltar de rama en rama. El diseño se alió con ellos y modificó sus huesos haciéndolos huecos. Comenzaron a aparecer las primeras plumas, aunque parece ser que eran ornamentales y no permitían el vuelo ( este fué el Archaeopteryx) .

La evolución y el paso del tiempo consiguieron que aquellos saurios emplumados finalmente volaran.

Hace 70 millones de años, el impacto de un enorme meteorito alteró dramáticamente las condiciones climáticas del planeta .Era el comienzo de la extinción de los dinosaurios, tan enormes e incapaces de adaptarse a la nueva atmósfera. Fué el inico de la era de los mamíferos que libres de sus depredadores comenzaron a prosperar y a evolucionar de manera espectacular.

¿Y en el cielo? Aquellos saurios pioneros que soñaron con volar y lo consiguieron conquistaron los cielos. Habían nacido las aves.

The dinosaur that pretended to fly

From my hide, I can spot a pair of silhouettes in the mist. A pair of Griffon Vultures are aproaching my hide slow but with strong decission. Their long necks, their claws, their powerful beak and especially the strength of their look ... remind me of those Jurassic Park´s Velociraptors.

That fierce look, with the size of their eyes so big in relation to the size of their head. That unexpressive look ....

350 million years ago, the great dinosaurs dominated that primitive and brutal land. While they prospered, their size increased dramatically. For the mammals of those days, things looked pretty different, they served as preys to the hunting saurians, therefore the most suitable size to go unnoticed was that of a small shrew.

Throughout the dominance of dinosaurs, reptiles conquered almost all biotypes. Even some of the smaller saurians dare to climb the trees, probably chasing dragonflies and other insects. To adapt to the heights, those first tree saurians (generation after generation) minimized their siza.. It is assumed that there was a period of may be thousands of years in which the saurians specialized in jumping from branch to branch. The design allied with them and modified their bones making them hollow. The first feathers began to appear, although it seems that they were ornamental and did not allow flight ( this was the Archaeopteryx)

Evolution and the passage of time made those feathered saurians finally fly.

70 millions years ago , the impact of a huge meteorite dramatically altered the environment of the planet. It was the end of the dinosaurs era , so huge but unable to adapt to the new atmosphere. It was the beginning of the mammals era, now free from the pressure of predators . Mammals began to thrive and the way they evolved was amazing.

What in the air ? Those saurian pioneers who dreamed of flying and succeeded conquered the skies. The birds were born.
