Una nueva vida
Inmóvil , esta araña del género Argiope espera encaramada en su red el tropiezo de algún insecto que le sirva de cena. Rodeada de farallones terrosos y costras arenosas , vive en un caluroso territorio donde abundan los insectos.
Su nombre viene del griego Argiope, “ ojos brillantes” porque cada uno de sus ojos tiene un tejido reflector tapetum que refleja la luz . Su telaraña es grande, con una característica X en el centro, que luce como si de una firma se tratase. Pero también es casi invisible. Un trampa perfecta en medio de este paisaje desértico.
El gran tamaño nos indica que es una hembra, puesto que las Argiopes presentan un gran dimorfismo sexual.
Se terminó el verano y posiblemente esté a punto de poner los huevos, que quedarán recogidos en un saquito dentro de la telaraña. Anteriormente se habrá alimentado del macho que la cortejó. Nada ms lejos de la crueldad, se trata de aprovechar el recurso alimenticio que es la propia araña para asegurar la supervivencia de la futura generación de arañas. Porque la vida adulta de las Argiopes es muy breve y esta hembra está a punto de terminar la suya, asegurando una vida nueva a su descendencia.
A new life
Motionless, this spider of the genus Argiope waits on his net for the stumble of an insect that serves as a dinner. Surrounded by earthy cliffs and sandy crusts, it lives in a hot territory where insects abound.
Its name comes from the Greek Argiope, "bright eyes" because each and all of its eyes have a reflective tissue called “tapetum “that reflects light. Its web is large, with a characteristic X in the center, which looks as if it were a signature from an artist.. But it is also almost invisible. A perfect trap in the middle of this desert landscape.
The large size indicates that it is a female, since the Argiopes have a notorious sexual dimorphism. The summer is over and it may be about to lay her eggs, which will be collected in a bag inside the web. Previously she will have fed on the male who courted her. Nothing related to cruelty, but about taking advantage of the food resource that is the spider body itself to ensure the survival of a future generation of spiders. Because the adult life of the Argiopes is very brief and this female is about to finish its own, assuring a new life for her offspring.
